Chapter 3

Chapter 3 discusses reading comprehension. When reading, kids as well as everyone need to comprehend what they read. The more reading you do the more information you gather. This helps to open up your vocabulary, knowledge, and helps you to understand things quicker. In other cases, it is much more difficult to comprehend what you have read if a person does not read. Instead of enjoying their reading, they will try so hard to figure something out which destroys the purpose of reading. As a teacher, we should be able to give some kind of help that would get the kids to learn to love reading and to get them to learn what they are reading. Teachers must get to know their students and see what they are interested in to understand them, so they can give them the proper material. If you have a child reading something that he/she has never seen then they will not understand that particular reading. They must experience something to understand what they are reading. The goal is to make reading a big part of the students life, because it will give students more of an advantage.

Chapters 1 and 2

Some of the things I learned in the Chapters were very helpful. I learned that by reading books, kids will be able to use these skills in more ways than one. Not only are they using it for reading, but it could help them with other subjects such as fine arts, social studies, mathematics, etc. Also, teachers should be able to understand that all kids are capable of learning not only certain ones. Kids will have a better response if the teacher is fair to each and everyone. If some children are not learning, then we need to understand and figure out a way to teach these students. Educators are role models and should definitely enjoy reading. Reading is an important tool for the kids, the more literature you give them the more knowledge they acquire. Making it fun and allowing the children to pick their own books or their own projects will be significant to them. They will enjoy reading what they picked out and it will cover the curriculum. Reading is an essential tool and could open the doors to many opportunities. The kids will get so much out of reading.

As a teacher, learning about different cultures is a good way to understand the students in the classroom. Different cultures believe in different ideas. When you discover what the students are about, you will be able to give them the correct material to help them learn. Students from other cultures can not make the change to our culture or beliefs by themselves, especially in just one day. They need help from the school and from the teachers to get them through it. We should not just focus on the American kids, but we should also focus on the other kids as well.

Children's Literature

Some authors I found on the website for Children's Literature that I found interesting were Hans Christian Anderson, Joanna Cole and Rose Impey.

Hans Christian Anderson was known to have an imagination which he used to create his writing/books. His writings were translated into more than 150 languages. They were also transformed into animated movies, plays, ballets, etc. Some books that were written by Han Christian Anderson were "The Ugly Duckling", "The Little Mermaid" and "Thumbelina". Having a daughter who is four years old, I am very familiar with those books. I really enjoy the book about the ugly duckling, because it really gives us a good idea about what happens to some people who do get mistreated. The ugly duckling was treated badly (both physically and mentally), but the little duckling did not give up. He wandered off and runs into many trials and tribulations, but eventually turns into this beautiful swan.

Joanna Cole enjoyed writing and explaining her stories in school, so she decided to write books. The first book she wrote was called "Cockroaches". Another book she wrote that became very popular was "The Magic School Bus". Their are many editions to this book, so many topics can be discussed in the classroom. Many people and many teachers use this book to read to their children. The "Magic school Bus" is a neat book to read, because you can experience all kinds of exciting adventures. This book or magical bus takes you everywhere to explore different kinds of ideas.

Rose Impey wrote for children of all ages. She started writing, because she loved telling stories in school. She wrote many books that showed her imagination and creativity. She wrote books like "Magical Princess Stories", "Knock Knock Who's There", "Pirate Patch and the message in the bottle" and Wanda Witch and the Wobbly Fang". She writes mostly about girl situations, because first of all she is a girl and in her life she is surrounded by many girls. Her book "Wanda Witch and the Wobbly Fang" is a very cute book. I just recently read it to my four year old daughter and she loved it. She wanted me to read it over and over.

Miss Nelson is missing by James Marshall is another good book that the kids would enjoy. I know I enjoyed it when I was young. It will also show them why they should not mistreat their teacher and maybe they can learn from this experience.

The website that helped me to find authors like Hans Christian Anderson, Joanna Cole, and Rose Impey was Children's Literature Independent Information and Reviews and Fantastic Fiction. It listed many authors and many books that helped with the information I needed. With all the options it lists, I can work with these books to help the children learn and to help them enjoy reading.
